The Sator Square is a four-times palindrome, considered one of the broadest magical formulas in the West. Palindromes were viewed as being immune to tampering by the devil, who would become confused by the repetition of the letters, and hence their popularity in protection and magical use. The square has been used in folk magic for various purposes, including putting out fires; removing jinxes and fevers; to protect cattle from witchcraft, and against fatigue when traveling.
The oldest datable representation of the Sator Square was found in the ruins of Pompeii. Others have been found in excavations under various historic churches and cathedrals throughout Europe and the Middle East.
This Sator Squares are engraved on solid 9 inch diameter hardwoods and 1/2 inch thick.
The colors are natural to the woods - no paints, dyes, or stains are used. Each is clear-coated in a vintage shellac formula and finished with natural waxes and oils. Foam feet keep the plate from moving while sitting on a flat surface.
